Mary Carmack-Altwies
First Judicial District Attorney for Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos Counties.
Mary Carmack-Altwies is a committed prosecutor, experienced attorney, and lifelong advocate for justice. As the First Judicial District Attorney, she is dedicated to ensuring public safety, seeking justice for victims, and implementing forward-thinking policies that serve the communities of Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Rio Arriba counties.
A proud graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, Mary has spent her career protecting the people of the First Judicial District. Before being elected District Attorney, she gained invaluable experience as both a public defender and a Deputy District Attorney, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the legal system from all sides.
Mary’s commitment to public service extends beyond the courtroom. She has served as President of her local PTA, taught at UNM Law School, volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and worked as a legal advocate for survivors of sexual assault. Her passion for justice is deeply rooted in her belief that safety and accountability go hand in hand with community engagement and support.
Since taking office in 2021, Mary and her team have been working to enhance public safety through smart policies and impactful initiatives. Under her leadership, the District Attorney’s Office has:
- Increased prosecution rates for felony drug possession and DWI cases.
- Expanded diversion programs to provide low-level offenders with opportunities for rehabilitation.
- Strengthened partnerships between law enforcement agencies through cross-training programs.
- Prioritized employee well-being, raising the minimum wage for staff, extending maternity and paternity leave, and offering hybrid work options.
Mary lives in Santa Fe with her wife, Jo, a retired law enforcement officer, and their two energetic young children. She is proud to serve the First Judicial District and remains committed to delivering justice, accountability, and meaningful change for the people of Northern New Mexico.
