ADA Trei Gilpin Joins FJDA Efforts to Combat Prolific Shoplifting

Santa Fe, NM — The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office is proud to announce that Assistant District Attorney Trei Gilpin has graduated valedictorian from the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. Gilpin will immediately begin field training with FJDA Chief Gaspar Garcia, focusing on becoming a leading prolific offender and shoplifting investigator and attorney for our district.

Agent Gilpin’s rare combination of legal expertise and now certified law enforcement training positions him to take on one of our community’s most persistent challenges—organized retail theft. As part of his new role, he will:

  • Train law enforcement officers on how to build stronger, trial-ready cases
  • Serve as a point person for local retailers to coordinate reports and build aggregate felony cases
  • Bring cases to the FJDA to help ensure that repeated and organized retail offenders are charged appropriately and sentenced to jail time when warranted

“This is a groundbreaking moment for our office,” said District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies. “Trei brings an unmatched combination of legal and policing knowledge to the front lines of crime prevention. We are beyond excited to have him back in action, and we believe this approach will be a turning point in how we combat and deter shoplifting in our district.”

As our community faces growing concerns over retail theft, the FJDA is taking the necessary proactive steps to support law enforcement, protect local businesses, and hold offenders accountable. With ADA Gilpin now trained as a sworn officer, the District Attorney’s Office is setting a new precedent for how jurisdictions can merge legal and investigative power to deliver justice.
