Damian Herrera case, Long provides his firsthand account of the June 15, 2017, killing spree. He recounts how surveillance footage played a critical role in the investigation and prosecution of the case. Also featured Sergeant Whitaker of Rio Arriba Sherriff’s Office.
On June 15, 2017, Northern New Mexico was rocked by a horrific crime spree. Damian Herrera shot and killed five people—three of them his own family members and two strangers in the Rio Arriba County. Herrera first targeted his own relatives, firing into the home and fatally wounding three family members. He fled the scene, encountered and killed a man later identified as archeologist, Michael Kyte, stole Kyte’s truck, and drove to Tres Piedras where he killed another man, later identified as Manuel Surrano, a security guard at the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Abiqui, New Mexico.
