Officer-Involved Shootings: Our Commitment to Justice and Transparency
At the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, we are dedicated to ensuring that all investigations of officer-involved shootings (OIS) are conducted with the utmost integrity, transparency, and fairness. Our guiding principles prioritize accountability, public trust, and the fair administration of justice.
Our approach
- Independent Investigation
Officer-involved shootings are complex incidents that demand thorough and unbiased investigations. Our office collaborates with independent agencies, such as the New Mexico State Police or third-party investigative teams, to ensure impartiality and transparency. These investigations are conducted with rigorous attention to detail to establish a clear and accurate account of the incident. - Commitment to Transparency
Public trust is the cornerstone of our work. We are committed to sharing the progress and outcomes of these cases with the community while respecting the rights of all parties involved. Updates are provided at key stages, including the completion of investigative reports and prosecutorial decisions. - Legal and Ethical Accountability
Our review process evaluates whether the actions of the officers involved comply with state and federal laws. Each case is analyzed based on facts, evidence, and applicable legal standards, with no consideration for external pressures or biases. - Victim and Family Support
We recognize that officer-involved shootings can have devastating impacts on families, communities, and law enforcement officers alike. Our office is committed to providing resources and support for all individuals affected, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed throughout the process.nare arcu dui.
- Review Process
- Evidence Collection: Independent investigators collect physical evidence, witness statements, body-worn camera footage, and other critical materials.
- Analysis and Legal Review: Prosecutors in our office analyze the evidence to determine whether criminal charges are warranted under the law.
- Presentation of Findings: Upon completing the review, we release a public statement outlining the findings and the legal rationale for the decision. In cases requiring further public discussion, we may call for a grand jury review.
