April 20, 2025 Santa Fe, NM – The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office joins the people of Rio Arriba County and the greater Northern New Mexico community in mourning the passing of Sheriff Billy Merrifield, a steadfast leader, dedicated lawman, and respected partner in justice.
Sheriff Merrifield was a champion for his community. His experience in law enforcement and corrections and his commitment to crime prevention and his respect for his role made him a vital partner and a cornerstone of our justice system. We will miss him.

Sheriff Merrifield was not only skilled in investigations and law enforcement operations but also deeply invested in the well-being of the community he served. His leadership extended beyond the badge—he was a mentor, a collaborator, and a true public servant whose influence will continue to resonate throughout the region.
